My grandmother was raised by Polish immigrants in a rural logging community near the mountains in Washington state. She was the eldest of 6 children and grew up on her family farm. Before she married, she went to business school and excelled in math and accounting. She married my grandfather and had 2 children, my uncle and mother. When my mom was just a baby, my grandfather left the family and my grandmother baked and took in laundry and did ironing to put herself through paralegal school to provide for her family. It was more rare to be a single mother in the 40's, but my grandmother always made sure that her children were provided for and sent to private Catholic schools.
It wasn't until 1965 that my grandma married again, a very kind and dear man that we knew as Grandpa Sam. My natural grandfather was killed in an accident before I was born, so Grandpa Sam became grandfather to my two cousins, my brother and myself.
After Grandpa Sam passed away in 1975, Grandma moved into a smaller house and lived alone independently, the way she liked it. She enjoyed having family coming over to visit and always kept in close touch with her brothers and sister. Grandma passed away in her sleep on Oct. 27th, 2005 at the age of 95. She remained independent and in her own home, just as she wanted.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM
At the rising sun and at its going down we remember them.
At the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter we remember them.
At the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of spring we remember them.
At the blueness of the skies and in the warmth of summer we remember them.
At the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of the autumn we remember them.
At the beginning of the year and when it ends we remember them.
As long as we live, they too will live, for they are now a part of us. As we remember them. When we are weary and in need of strength we remember them.
When we are lost and sick at heart we remember them.
When we have decisions that are difficult to make we remember them.
When we have joy we crave to share we remember them.
When we have achievements that are based on theirs we remember them.
For as long as we live, they too will live,
For they are now a part of us, as we remember them.
